CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Three John Adams Middle School students on their way to Washington D.C. for a field trip were left behind at a rest stop in Braxton County.
Two of the students fell ill and wanted off the bus, so the teachers called the students parents to come get them, and dropped off the sick students along with a sibling of one of the students a rest stop.
The students were left alone for about 15 minutes at 5 a.m., until their parents arrived to pick them up.
Now the teachers involved are under investigation by the School Board, and member Pete Thaw is having a tough time understanding what happened.
“What happened is an absolute no-no. You don't leave children at a rest stop at five in the morning. If they had to stay three hours, you would have to stay three hours till the parents get there to get them,” Thaw said.
Michelle Tyler's daughter wasn't on that trip, but as a John Adams parent she is concerned about it, wondering how she would feel if it was her child left alone.
“I am pretty protective of my kids. I don't think is a safe thing to do,” Tyler said.
Mr. Thaw says he thought it was common sense for teachers to know- never to leave students unattended.
“What surprises me most is that we had some very, very qualified people in charge of that trip, who are very dependable. I don't know what happened,” Thaw said.
Superintendent Duerring says he will not discuss what type of disciplinary action those teachers could face because it is a personnel matter.
This is the second time recently that John Adams Middle School has been under investigation for a field trip.
Football coaches were suspended last fall for not properly supervising students when a simulated sex act was performed on the school bus.
