SETH, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some students at Sherman Junior High School are looking ahead in the game of life -- way ahead.
"Gear up or give everything up" is a catchy slogan that the students are following as part of the "Gear Up" program. They said it is providing them with goals to accomplish things they didn't think were possible.
It's a program so powerful that 7th grader Harley Hill now wants to go to college. In a few weeks, she and her 7th grade classmates will tour Mountain State University.
"Gear Up" is a federally funded program aimed at schools in low-income rural areas. It provides field trips, computers and even college scholarships.
On Friday, local students learned about careers in cosmetology, law enforcement, engineering and even television news.

That was so cool. I was so glad I came that day. Harley is one of my best friends. I'm an 8th grader there.

I think the program is wonderful, and I have been really pleased with the job of the principal and the teachers at SJHS. With their help, and the wonderful parents, and students in Boone County I believe this program will be a wonderful success and a great opportunity for our children. Thanks WSAZ for representing Boone County in a positive light!!! Way to go SJHS!!!
