HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Why Huntington? A local Web site has the answer. It's called whyhuntington.com and it features all things positive about the River City, beckoning visitors and new residents.

Bill Rawlinson didn't grow up in Huntington and hasn't really lived here all that long. In fact, he's lived all over the country and only moved here 13 years ago. He went to Marshall University and, after graduating, he could have gone anywhere but chose to stay here.

“It was the people," Rawlinson said. You don't find people like the ones here everywhere, plus the parks and the river.”

Those were the driving motivations behind his creation of whyhuntington.com. The Web site features everything from videos and photos to essays and restaurant reviews. But, since Bill isn't a Huntington native, his knowledge base is limited. That's why he has created a special section where others can contribute.

“There are spots for original art, poetry, business reviews, and the list goes on,” he said.

Dave Scott knows the value of Huntington. He went to school at Marshall years ago before moving away for work. He said if he could find a good job here, he'd leave his home in Columbus in a heartbeat to move back.

“Huntington has a sense of community,” Scott said.

Huntington isn't alone in its grassroots efforts to highlight community positives. Whycharlestonwv.com promotes the Capital City with similar features.

Back to Rawlinson -- if you look around, you won't find any ads on whyhuntington.com. That's not his goal.

“I’m not in this for monetary gain," he said. If I get one person to move here because of the Web site, it would all be worth it. That’s the ultimate goal.”

Whyhuntington.com was started under the umbrella of Create Huntington, a grassroots effort to promote other positive projects in the community.

Hi. I am considering moving to Huntington for a job opportunity at Marshall medical school. Where is the best and safe place to live and raise children in Huntington or the surrounding towns? Thank you!

Levi, I've lived in more places than I can count right now and the grass just isn't greener on the other side. Everywhere I've lived there have been problems; it's part of life. I'm sorry you have had to deal with some of the more unfortunate aspects of Huntington but I can't believe you haven't found any joy at all in the last 20 years! I invite you to come by a chat-n-chew at the Fredrick building on Thursdays at 5:30pm and to get involved improving the city. If there isn't something going on that is addressing an issue you care about you just have to speak up and a group of people will form around you to try and address it. If you see problems in the city you need to work to improve things; just complaining won't help the problem go away. So please join us in trying to make the city better instead of dwelling on the problems.

Thank you for putting up such a nice website. It's great seeing so much excitement and energy in the city again!
