She beat and choked her daughter, then locked her in her room.
Now a mother from Charleston will spend time behind bars on child neglect charges.
Friday, a judge sentenced Catherine Brown and her husband, Russell, up to five years in jail.
The crime happened back in 2004 when police say the 11-year-old cleaned the stairs wrong.
James Stucky, a Kanawha County judge, Mrs. Brown you pretty much caused this girl to live in constant fear and terror for her own safety. Mr. Brown you just turned a blind eye the duties and responsibilities you had as her father."
The Browns were taken straight to jail.
Their attorney says the couple has been sober for two months and have been attending Alcoholic Anonymous meetings.
The child is in foster care.
