Raw Video: Senator Speaks About Favoritism

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An amendment to a bill that would require restaurants to post calorie counts was done "to accomodate Oshel and his businesses," according to Senator Frank Deem, a Republican from Wood County. Senator Deem was against the bill but changed his vote Tuesday.

The bill failed in the Senate on Monday. Senator Deem asked the senate to take a second vote Tuesday evening. An amendment was adopted that would exclude regional restaurants, those in less than 10 states plus West Virginia.

Senator Deem says former state Senator Oshel Craigo, a Democrat who represented Putnam County for 22 years, likely influenced many votes. Craigo owns Tudor's Biscuit Worlds and Gino's throughout West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. The amendment would exclude Tudor's and Gino's.

Senator Deem says he voted against the bill Monday for political reasons. But voted for the bill with the added amendment.
