RIPLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A 12-year-old boy is in police custody after deputies say he stole his mom's car and rammed a Ripley Police cruiser on Interstate 77 Wednesday.

According to the Wood County Sheriff's Department, the 12-year-old was first reported as a runaway from his home in Mineral Wells on Tuesday, but was later found and returned home. The next morning, the boy's mother woke up and found her son and her Chevy Lumina missing. She called the police and a multi-agency bulletin was issued to law enforcement agencies in the area.

A short time later, a Ripley Police officer spotted the Lumina headed south on I-77 and tried to pull it over. The officer says the driver fled and rammed his cruiser, causing the 12-year-old to lose control of the car and hit the guardrail.

The 12-year-old was taken into custody by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Investigators are working with the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office to see if/what charges will be filed in the case.

No one was hurt in the crash.

Why does everyone just assume it is the parents? Maybe this child is just a spoiled brat and doesn't like rules. Don't assume until you get the facts.

There may be a reason the kid won't stay home. They need to talk to him and ask why.
