Scrap Metal Ordinance

Huntington City Council wants to put the clamp on scrap metal thieves.

Monday Council members talked about ways to enforce new laws on scrap metal dealers and recyclers. Due to the high price of metal, thieves have been stealing everything from copper wire at utility company substations to grave markers.

Scrap metal laws have actually been on the books for years, but the new ordinance is tailored after a similar law dealing with local pawn shops.

Also Monday, Huntington Sanitary Workers showed up in force to voice their opposition to contract restructuring. The employees say a new plan calling for a one year deal instead of a multi-year contract, threatens their job security.

Council also authorized the mayor to purchase the annual allotment of road salt for the winter.
