HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An armed robbery in Huntington Sunday night ended with a dog fight between a K-9 unit and another dog--and no suspects in custody.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. at the Speedway on 3rd Avenue and 24th Street.

The ordeal began when investigators say a young couple went into the Speedway on 25th Street and 3rd Avenue and stole three cases of beer using a knife. Police got to the scene with a K-9 unit, Bogie, and began tracking the scent of the suspects--until Bogie was attacked.

Police say the neighborhood dog, Max, attacked Bogie while on a leash. Officers then used gunfire to stop the fight.

According to the Huntington Police report, the officer "fired his weapon once striking the rottweiler / chow in the neck. The dog refused to release K-9 Bogie. The officer was then forced to kick the dog in the head at that point he released K-9 Bogie."

Max, the dog that was shot, was taken to the animal emergency room in Ceredo, where records show, "...the dog's owner told the veterinarian the dog was chained in the yard and started to fight with the police dog. Officer shot this dog point blank."

Police Chief Skip Holbrook says the officer fired the gun not to kill, but to stop the dogs from fighting.

"Both dogs locked onto each other to no avail. The civilian's dog had his mouth around the police dog's throat," said Holbrook. "Police made their decision based on they felt the dog's life was in jeopardy."

The suspects who stole the cases of beer are still on the loose. Here are the descriptions of the men:
20 years old
white male
5' 8" tall
red hoodie, hat, red & black shorts

20 years old
white female
5' 5"
blue hoodie, jeans, blonde hair

Both dogs are doing well. Max was treated and released for his bullet wound, which pretty much grazed his neck.

Bogie the police dog is back to work with a punctured snout.

Anyone who might recognize those suspects should call police.

This cop's story is bogus. The officer lost control of his dog. PERIOD. The K9 should have been shot and the officer should be fired.

well i dont agree with the way chris is acting but he is right about the scent. i was a handler in the military and everyones scent is different, just like your fingerprints. all you have to do is get a good starting point and off he goes. another thing when hes tracking he isnt looking for animals hes following the scent so he probably never even saw the dog until it attacked.
