UPDATE: Wednesday @ 10:00am
Melissa Newman tells WSAZ.com if she could take his (BJ Berkhouse) place she would in a heartbeat.

"I will never touch another drink of alcohol the rest of my life because of what happened," Newman said. "If I wouldn't have left my house that night, this would have never happened."

Newman says she talked to BJ's family just days after the accident and apologized for what happened. She says she doesn't remember anything, but she's not a bad person.

Newman tells WSAZ.com that she believes something was put in her drink that night. She says before she took a drink that night, she gave her keys to a friend, but that's one of the last things she remembers.

"I can't imagine the pain his family is going through. I have caused a lot of pain for my family, too," Newman said. "If I could take it back I would. I accept responsibility and I'm ready to move on."

UPDATE @ 11:00am
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The woman accused of seriously hurting a man while drinking and driving in Charleston pleaded guilty on Tuesday.

Melissa Newman pleaded guilty to DUI causing injury, second offense DUI and driving without insurance.

Police say Newman hit B.J. Berkhouse last summer while he was walking on Capitol Street in Charleston.

At the time of the crash, prosecutors say Newman's blood alcohol level was nearly double the legal limit and she was on prescription drugs.

Today, Newman's attorney said she can't even recall the accident but does remember being in the hospital.

Berkhouse was in the hospital for months and is still bound to a wheelchair, but he says he's doing the best that he can.

"I can't walk without a walker and I'm 31, so I can't do a lot," Berkhouse said.

He hopes to be admitted into a rehabilitation center soon.

The accident has also been a hard on Berkhouse's family. His girlfriend Lindsay Bolar says all they can do now is look forward to his recovery.

"I'm glad she's admitting what she's done, but it will never justify what happened," Bolar said. "You have to focus on him getting better and getting back to where he can be to live the life he wants to live."

Newman could face up to three years in jail. Her sentencing hearing is set for June 3.

Tonight in June 2011.... Melissa does regret what she has done. She might be too scared to apologize because no one would accept it anyway. She posted a status on her facebook tonight i wanted to share.. If I could take that boys place I would a hundred times over. But I can't! Trust me I've prayed and questioned god... why?

I know this person only briefly and have herd the horror stories of others that her lies and disruptive behavior has caused. She is nothing but trash. BJ has truly suffered as will her three children will as they grow up in her shadow. They will know how our legal system treats drunk drivers. Maybe they will get the idea that it’s cool or OK. I would hope that they will get the right message from our court system. As for using the “Hughart” name, she has been court ordered not to use that name in any way relating to herself. My prayers go out to the victim and his family.
