HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Cabell County Schools’ random drug testing program for students who participate in interscholastic extracurricular activities or drive to school is being expanded to include county middle schools.
The program was established at the beginning of the current school year in the county’s high schools.
According to a news release, all of county’s middle schools will be providing orientation for these students. The dates tentatively scheduled as follows:
• Huntington Middle School (June 3rd)
• Milton Middle School (May 26th)
• Barboursville Middle School (May 19th)
• Enslow Middle School (May 13th)
• Beverly Hills Middle School (May 7th)
Attendance at the orientation is mandatory for any student in grades 6-8 who will compete on one of the schools’ athletic teams at any point during the 2009–10 school year.
Current 5th grade students who wish to participate in the activities outlined should attend as well.
Students will be provided with a copy of the county’s drug testing policy and a consent form to participate in the drug testing program. The consent forms will not be accepted by the schools until the beginning of the school year in August, 2009.
The orientation session will be repeated in August at Cabell Midland High School and Huntington High School for any student who misses an orientation session at his/her home middle school.
The sessions in August will also be open to all parents and guardians who want to learn more about the program before giving consent for their student to participate.

5th graders?!? They are going to test 5th graders as well. This is ridiculous! So, why stop there? Why don't we test the K-4 kids as well? How about we get the 5 year olds to pee in a cup if they want to play soccer. I can understand testing high school kids. I don't agree with it, but at least I understand why. C'mon, middle school now? Really?!? If middle school kids are doing drugs, it's not a school issue, it's a parental one. It's a sign that parents aren't doing any parenting. That's a problem that no amount of drug testing can solve. Oh, and 'CMHS student' you're the reason they test for drugs. It's your attitude that seems to be the downfall of today's youth. "its not cabell countys choice if we do drugs or not!!we are our own person so let us do whatever we want" Are you serious?!? It's called ILLEGAL for a reason.

My question is, why only the kids who are in extracurricular activities? I think all kids should be tested. I was trained to be a teacher, and then I got to student teaching and saw all the kids coming in drunk or stoned. What was I told by Marshall University that I could do about it? Nothing, lest I want to expose myself to a lawsuit. I fully support drug testing for students--and for teachers and other school workers, by the way, before someone calls me a hypocrite--as long as if the drug tests come out positive then something is actually DONE to help the person get over the addiction. I don't care if a thousand tests come up negative, if one child is found using drugs and helped to get away with them then the tests are doing their job. Of course, if you want to find out who's doing drugs without the tests, just mention them at a classroom or board meeting and see who protests the loudest, and there you go. If they didn't have something to hide, they wouldn't be against it.

I support testing for the problems that lead to drug use. I do not support testing for the drug use.
