PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- More than a dozen people were arrested during a drug roundup in Pike County, Ky.

The Pike County Sheriff's Office teamed up with operation UNITE, Kentucky State Police, and the Pikeville Police Department to take drugs and dealers off the streets.

"As a result of several months of investigations, we've been having operations like we had today," said Pike County Sheriff Charles 'Fuzzy' Keesee.

Police targeted several communities, including serving an arrest warrant at this apartment complex behind Shelby Valley High School.

Police say they recovered several pills, cash, and a firearm. They say people are even trading food stamp cards to get their drugs.

"This card consists of a couple hundred dollars a month and they trade for 50, 75 dollars worth of drugs," said Chief Deputy Melvin Sayers.

"We hope that this will have a great deterrent effect to those that are selling drugs and may start selling drugs," said Sheriff Keesee.

He says it is an effort that requires help and tips from the community.

In all, 13 people were arrested. Police say more arrests are expected. If you suspect drug activity in your area, call the UNITE drug tipline at 866-424-4382.
