Seventy-four firefighters have died while battling fires in West Virginia since 1900. On Sunday, firefighters gathered to honor those men and women for their courage at the West Virginia Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
Elkins firefighter Michael Hart was one of the firefighters honored. His former geometry teacher, Mary Polling, says Hart always wanted to be a firefighter.
"He tolerated geometry, but he always let us know that he was going to be a firefighter," said Polling. "He was a brilliant firefighter."
Organizers say the ceremony was not a sad occasion, but instead it was a celebration.
The ceremony was funded completely by firefighters' donations.
