OCTOBER 26, 2006 -- The West Virginia State Police shot and killed a man in Roane County Thursday evening after they say he hid in the woods and shot at them.
State Police say they were called to help Roane County Sheriff's Deputies arrest Brian Batten, 33, at his house in Roane County at about 5:20pm. According to a news release from the State Police, Batten was hiding in the woods when they got to his house--and made threats to kill the officers and anyone in the area. They say he was armed with a gun.
When the police went in to the woods to arrest Batten, investigators say Batten shot at the troopers, forcing them to return fire. Batten was hit and died at the scene.
No one else was hurt during the incident. State police told WSAZ they were arresting Batten on illegal weapons charges.
Right now, troopers aren't releasing any other details, but they say they plan to give more information later today.
