OCTOBER 31, 2006 -- Police say a landlord tenant dispute got firey, as in arson--and then got violent Tuesday afternoon. It happened at a house on Beechwood Road between South Point and Chesapeake in Lawrence County, Ohio.
A neighbor, Joann Marcum, says she heard three gunshots at about noon from her neighbor Tina Lovejoy's home, then ran inside to find Tina and her son Jeremy both shot in the head. Joann says Tina's injuries were the most life threatening.
"There was a lot of blood around her eye," said Marcum. "When the police got there, i told them to tend to Tina first."
Police arrested James G Jones for the shootings. He's charged with two counts of felonious assault and arson. Police and neighbors say an angered James Jones first torched his own trailer, then turned on his landlords living across the road.
Another neighbor, Bob Young, said she gave him an eviction notice, then got his gun and went to shoot them after burning out his own trailer.
Acting on a tip from the suspect's own family, sheriff's deputies tracked Jones to his daughter's nearby apartment--where he was arrested without incident. They expect to recover a handgun, likely the assault weapon, in Jones' black Chrysler.
"This was a crime of violence, he was out to harm people," said Lawrence County Sheriff Tim Sexton.
The sheriff says James Jones is no stranger to jail, with an arrest record going back to 1978, including charges of domestic violence and prescription forgery.
Right now, Tina and Jeremy are listed in critical condition.
