PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The new section of U.S. Route 35 is still under construction, but safety concerns have been growing for a while.
Joe Haynes, Putnam County Commissioner, says where Hurricane Creek Road meets the highway is an accident waiting to happen.
“We've been hearing for over a year concerns about this crossing,” Haynes said.
Currently, there’s only a stop sign at the intersection. Drivers will then have to cross four lanes of traffic. The county proposed a traffic light and even an overpass for the intersection, but studies done by the Division of Highways show only a stop sign is needed.
Haynes said those studies may be flawed.
“How old are those traffic studies? When were they done?,” Haynes asked. “Have they been done since Toyota has been here, since the Wal-Mart, since all the new homes?”
The intersection has been a hot topic among school bus drivers. Charlie Tribble, Putnam County Schools Coordinator of Transportation, said that several drivers have come to him with concerns. They’re worried they won’t be able to pick up enough speed to make it all the way across. That section of Hurricane Creek Road is also known for getting extremely foggy.
“I understand If my child was riding the bus and had to cross that with semis loaded down coming at you 60 to 65 miles per hour," Tribble said. "It’s a cause for grave concern.”
Tribble, along with the County Commission, have sent requests to the DOH for another study of the intersection. If a light isn’t installed by next fall, Tribble said the county could consider an alternate route to keep buses from crossing that section of Route 35.
The new section of the highway is set to open sometime in June.

I have ridden that road on a motorcycle. Its has a very scenic view. But when trying exit from it onto one the side roads it is/or can be very dangerous.I know from experience.Having had a semi come up on me while exiting at hurricane ck.rd. to rte 817.Do in part to there not being any exit lanes.
E.L. Robinson engineered the new section of Rt. 35 Paul Mattox (Sec. of the WVDOH) used to work for E.L. Robinson. Until he started his own company......that he sold to E.L. Robinson I wonder why this was over looked? I can tell you taht when doing value engineering (saving the WVDOH money on a project by changing materials and / or design) the design engineering firm gets 50% of the money saved.
took a little trip with friends that way about a month ago. Indeed a light is truly needed there...very scary and not a good traffic situation at all.
