SPENCER, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Roane General Hospital and Roane County Family Health Care will stop delivering babies this summer.
The hospital will stop its in-patient obstetrical services July 31.
According to a news release, the services are being discontinued because of several reasons, including low birth rate, an aging population, and the difficulty of recruiting specialty physicians to rural communities.
“We’ve done everything we can do to preserve the program. It’s just not possible anymore,” Larry Dent, chief executive officer at Roane County Family Health Care said.
Roane General and Family Health Care will continue to offer prenatal and postpartum services to its patients. The hospital will also help patients make arrangements for their deliveries.
"Roane County has the third lowest birth rate in the state," Dent said. "We are only scheduled for 88 births this year."
Dent also tells WSAZ.com nearly 60-percent of mothers already go to Charleston or Parkersburg to deliver their babies.

This is sad. I live in Gilmer Co and my son was born in Roane because it was the closest place to deliver. It was also the quickest place to scedule me for my first pregnancy check up. Weston wanted me to be seen for the first visit only 4 months before I was due to give birth. I hate to see this happening. Its sad to all the women in rural areas who have no where safe to deliver their babies, expecially roane family health patients. Its nice to have your regular doctor or at least one your familiar and comfortable with doing the delivery. When you have to travel numerous hours to give birth it can be awful - a dr you dont know, a staff that makes you uncomfortable, and you risk not making it in time. Im sad to see the ob department shutting down in roane and I wish they could find a way to keep it up and running.
those wanting universal health care arnt worrying about paying for it, this will be on the back of the working man, with more taxes,on everything it will even cover ilegal immigrants, if its so great congress should hv the same coverage
Another great post Pablo. For years these rich, greedy republicans have acted as though they are royalty living in their castle made of money and we are the obediant peasants whose only goal should be to serve them. One only has to look at our current economy to see this little kingdom of theirs is starting to crumble around them. But according to their court jester (Rush Limbaugh) we the peasants (working middle class) are to blame. So go ahead republicans, bust our unions, cut our wages, take away our benefits and make one employee do the work of four, because in the end you are destorying your own castle walls.
