Congressman Alan Mollohan overcame ethics allegations to win his 13th term in West Virginia's First District.
His Republican challenger, State Delegate Chris Wakim (WAKE'-um) of Ohio County, ran a campaign that focused on an F-B-I investigation into federal earmarks Mollohan secured for nonprofit groups in his district.
In some cases, the Democrat had helped start the groups, and their employees included associates and political contributors.
Wakim's campaign was also damaged by ethical questions. Those included charges that he had exaggerated his military record and his admission that bars he owned paid out winnings on video poker machines when the practice was still illegal.
