Kanawha City Barricaded Man Identified

It started out as a police chase in North Charleston... and a man police identify as Robert Ferrell barricaded himself inside a room at the Knight's Inn in Kanawha City. Kanawha emergency dispatch tell WSAZ around 5:52 on Saturday morning, the standoff ended when Ferrell tried to take his own life by shooting himself in the head. Now, Ferrell is in serious condition at Charleston Area Medical Center.

This started Friday afternoon around 4:00pm, officers tried the pull Ferrell over for a traffic violation. They say he took off and led them on a chase over to MacCorkle Avenue and through Kanawha City.

Police say he was going to meet a woman he knows at the Knights Inn. When Ferrell pulled in, investigators say he jumped out of the car, fired at least one shot at police and then sent his pitbull to attack the officers.

Police shot and killed the dog--and Ferrell ran into the motel room.

Police tried to negotiate with Ferrell. They said they found it unusual that Ferrell did not have any demands.

This is not the first time Ferrell has been in trouble with the law. Police say he has had some domestic troubles, but they say they don't believe Ferrell planned for Friday afternoon to end with him in trouble with the law and in the hospital with a gunshot wound. Now, Ferrell is facing several charges including attempted murder. More charges could follow.

Police tell us that Robert Ferrell grew up in the Charleston area, and he has children that live in the area, but he currently lives in Virginia. As for charges Ferrell might be facing, police say he will probably be charged with endangerment, attempted murder and felony possession of a handgun.

We still do not know at this point why Ferrell fled the police in the first place. Police say the investigation in still ongoing.
