NOVEMBER 13, 2006 -- The Logan County Sheriff's Department reports the suspect behind a robbery and hostage situation in Stollings is now under arrest. Police say the suspect held 6 people hostage at the Family Discount Pharmacy.
The incident began around 1:20 pm and ended at about 3 o'clock.
We've learned new information from a police briefing:
HERE'S WHAT UNFOLDED:
Pharmacy technician Jessica Thompson of Neibert says the gunman walked into the store and demanded pills, saying he needed the drugs but couldn't afford to buy them.
Thompson says she and two other employees hid under a counter while three other people in the store froze. The man screamed for the workers to get up and they obeyed.
Thompson says the man told the hostages that he wanted to kill himself but did not want to hurt them. She says he was given an unknown quantity of a painkiller and an anti-anxiety drug, which he ingested and became drowsy.
Workers told the man there were more drugs in an adjacent building. Thompson says she offered to get the keys to the other building but instead ran outside for help.
She says she was terrified during the ordeal.
Route 10 is now back open. It was closed during the ordeal.
Several businesses are in the same building as the pharmacy. Witnesses tell us the people inside the other businesses were evacuated and were able to get out safely.
