Big Gift For New Library

The plan to build a new state of the art public library in Charleston is moving forward.

The campaign received its first corporate gift Thursday.

The American Electric Power Foundation pledged $500,000 to the campaign.

The money will go to the new library and make improvements to six other county libraries.

A campaign spokesperson says this is a huge boost in meeting the needs of the community.

Tom Heywood, president of the Library Foundation, said, "There's no way we can get there without support of the public and private. We're go encourage we have public and private coming together for this project and to our future ."

The new library is expected to be built on Lee Street and Leon Sullivan Way.

The library project is expected to cost nearly $50 million .

So far, members have raised $9 million.
