Last night was a big night for just about everyone in Wayne County, except just about everyone from Wayne County was in Wheeling!
That’s where the Wayne Pioneers and the Tolsia Rebels faced-off for the AA state title.
It took three tries before Wayne coach Tom Harmon could get a Gatorade bath at the end of a state title game.
But what made the win more exciting for Wayne players and fans made it that much more heartbreaking for Tolsia supporters.
It was two teams from the same county where football is life, competing on the states biggest stage.
But many fans that made the more than 250 mile journey to watch schools play the game, said that Wayne County was a winner either way.
At the end of the night, the pioneers walked away with the state title, and Tolsia, left everything out on the field. Either way, Wayne County boasted the best football and fans in the state.
Wayne lost in the title game in 2000 and 2004. Friday night was Tolsia's first trip to the championship game.
