A lot of children have pen pals at one time or another and just about every child has had birthday balloons at some point. But one young girl in our region used her birthday balloons to find a pen pal.

Jessica Nelson just turned 10-years-old and that mystery letter may have been one of her favorite presents.

You have to send letters to get them in return, so Jessica attached one to a birthday balloon and just let it go.

“I wrote that I'm 10-years-old and where I live and we let it go in the middle of the yard and we live near a lot of trees so I didn't think it would go that far,” said Nelson.

But, the pen-pal seeking letter traveled more than 60 miles from her home in Rush, Kentucky, all the way to Nitro, West Virginia, where a man from Poca found it.

Jessica does plan to send a letter back, but this time, she says she'll use the post office.

The man that found Jessica's letter is a truck driver. He found the balloon in Mannlia Creek near Nitro.
