Marker Dedicated for Marshall Plane CrashIt is a valley and hillside near the approach to Tri-State Airport that looks like most of the other land in this area of Wayne County. But there is now a marker nearby that tells why this particular site is so different.
The historical marker reads as follows: "Marshall Plane Crash Site. On Nov. 14, 1970, 75 people died in the worst sports related air tragedy in U.S. history, when a Southern Airways DC-9 crashed into the hillside nearby. The victims included 36 Marshall University football players, 9 coaches and administrators, 25 fans and air crew of 5. No one survived this horrific disaster."
Many surviving family members had never visited the crash site until today and they see the sign marker as a fitting tribute to their loved ones.
Anyone who wants to see the crash site should take the Kenova exit on Interstate 64 and head south. There are signs directing visitors to the site.
