CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- When you turn on a radio, you expect music to be there, but a bill before Congress might change that.
Opponents argue it's just fair business, but folks at one local said it's the end of radio as we know it.
Congress could soon force stations to pay a fee every time they play songs -- or pay to play. The recording industry heavily lobbied Congress to get the bill in front of the House and Senate. They want compensation from radio stations who make billions in sales by playing songs without paying artists and record labels.
To fight back, the National Association of Broadcasters lobbied for the Local Radio Freedom Act.
The fight is not only a split between party lines, but also by geography. The record company's bill is mostly supported by representatives in the Northeast and California. The Radio Stations' Act is supported by representatives mostly in the South and Midwest, including in West Virginia.
There's no word when the House or Senate will vote on the bills. Radio stations already compensate the writers and composers of music when it's played. An independent analyst estimates stations could pay between $2 billion to $7 billion in fees if the bill passes.

You know, I only listen to one station, but my children are more "hip" than I am. They listen to all of the music. It enables them learn to dance, sing and enjoy the different music that is out there. As far as the TV goes, I am taking it out of the house. When the radio is on, my children get a lot more done as in cleaning their rooms or helping me out. WHAT A CROCK. I may not be the brightest bulb in the room, but this country has gone to hell in a hand basket and I for one cannot afford to raise my 2 children, pay my bills and now this.... OMG I am just sick!!!!!
I want to inform everyone that there is a petition and a way to contact your local state representative to fight this bill brought about by the RIAA fatcats. Visit http://www.radioalive09.tk
For those who don't know, local AM & FM commercial broadcast radio earns money by selling advertising time. We have globs of FCC regulations to follow and yearly fees to the FCC for just about everything we do. We provide local news, weather, broadcast local sports, community announcements, help raise money for local charities, etc. plus provide emergency services and notifications or can get fined by the FCC. We have huge electric bills, equipment investments and repairs, big insurance preiums, employee payrolls, we pay BMI, ASCAP, Sesac for composers of music/songs. Satellite radio can always raise your rates, local Broadcast radio is always free and always there. The record labels for decades have always screwed performers, look at all the lawsuits. There are 132 music radio stations in WV, collectively we have to come up with $5.5 million during the first year, then it keeps going up. We're still selling at 1980 rates, note all the new stations in the last 15 years. We are not RICH!
