Patty Smith didn't know until four years ago that her father was a Marshall University player who died in the 1970 plane crash that killed most of the school's football team.

Smith was born on November 21st, 1970, the day James "Jimo" Adams was buried in Mansfield in north-central Ohio. She had been given up for adoption and searched for her natural parents for years.

A social worker from an adoption resource center in Charleston told Smith about her birth father in June of 2002. Smith says it was one of the most intense moments in her life.

A movie that tells the story of Marshall's rebuilding after the crash, "We Are Marshall," opens nationwide December 22nd.
