MAIDSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - A Preston County man has died in a weekend roof fall at a northern West Virginia coal mine, becoming the 47th coal-mine related fatality nationwide this year.
According to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, John Elliott, a 26-year-old electrician from Newburg, died last night at Dana Mining Company's Prime Number One mine in Monongalia County.
Terry Farley, administrator for the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, says three workers were riding in a rubber-tired vehicle when the roof collapsed at an intersection.
Two of the men were able to jump out but Elliott could not.
Since January, West Virginia has recorded 24 coal-mine related deaths.
