An FAA preliminary report stated ice may have caused the plane crash near Summersville earlier this month.
Christian Grahl radioed a controller he was having engine problems and needed to land at the nearest airport.
He told the controller the engine may have ice in it.
Grahl was cleared to land in Beckley, but told the controller he needed to land at a closer airport.
He was directed to the Summersville Airport.
The last thing the controller heard from Grahl was the plane's engine had no power and he was not able to maintain altitude.
The plane crashed near the Nicholas County community of Poe.
Grahl was flying from Coldwater, Michigan to Raleigh, North Carolina.
