CABIN CREEK, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Last week local activists were arrested while protesting mountaintop removal mining.
Saturday they continued making noise, but in a more relaxed way.
Activist Larry Gibson hosted his 23rd annual Fourth of July Music Festival at his home on Kayford Mountain right above Cabin Creek.
Hundreds of visitors stopped by to listen to local musicians sing about their love for the West Virginia Hills.
Gibson says he hopes the festival raises awareness about the negative effects of strip mining.
Larry Gibson told WSAZ.com "What we're doing here is trying to preserve a little piece of Appalachia so it doesn't get destroyed. They don't need to take it all."
Gibson says everyone is welcome to attend the festival, including those with different views on the issue of mountaintop mining.
The festival runs through Sunday.

I wish you strip miners would face the facts--Even if strip mining is allowed to continue and the treehuggers lose--you will be out of a job within the next 10-15 years- As the coal will run out-look at the mountains that you are destroying now and then look at what you have left? Experts have said that there is only 20 years of coal left in WV and Appalachia. Your best bet is too join the treehuggers and demand better jobs from Byrd and Manchin.

Yes, I know people seem to be dropping over dead left and right from mercury poisoning. I read that it may soon be a ‘pandemic’. As for that unsafe drinking water, 91.7%, of West Virginian’s were provided water from public drinking water systems back in 2006. I am sure that number has increased since then. Those people are not drinking unsafe water. For the few that do not have public drinking water and are dependent on wells, that becomes a county health department issue and if the health department is doing their job, they will confirm that these wells are properly installed via a WV Certified Well Driller. After that, people do have to take some responsibility and maintain and properly treat the wells themselves.
