CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Forty youngsters from across West Virginia are competing for fun, glory and a $1,000 college scholarship at the American Marble Tournament in Charleston.
The tournament began Thursday at the Town Center Mall and continues through Saturday. The winners of the boys and girls divisions will each receive a scholarship and a trophy.
The tournament is sponsored by American Marbles, a nonprofit group that promotes and works to preserve the game of marbles. Scholarships are funded with sales of marbles provided by West Virginia marble manufacturers.
Tournament President Marvin George of Clarksburg says playing marbles helps children develop social skills as well as hand-eye coordination.
