HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Huntington fire officials say a five-story apartment building where a weekend blaze killed at least nine people had no sprinkler system.
One victim was a child.
Fire Chief Greg Fuller says sprinklers aren't mandated by state fire code. However, smoke alarms are. Fuller says the Huntington Fire Department is checking whether the circa-1924 building was in compliance. Several alarms were found in the building.
Fuller says he believes all the people inside the building at the time are accounted for. Fourteen people were rescued from the building.
The Saturday night fire was Huntington's worst in nearly 50 years.
City Fire Marshal David Bias says it could take days to identify the cause.
