HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Good News Mountaineer Garage provided its 1,000th car to a family Monday morning.
Shawnette Berryand and her two sons received a 1991 Mazda Minivan during a ceremony at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington.
"We are thrilled to be giving away our 1,000th car and helping a mother pursue her career as an LPN," said Barbara Bayes, Executive Director.
Good News Mountaineer Garage is a non-profit organization that solicits donated vehicles, repairs them and provides them to families or individuals with low incomes who have no other available transportation.
Recipients are selected by contracting agencies that are working to get people economically independent and off public assistance.
A survey indicates that within one year of receiving a vehicle, 70% of the families went off public assistance, 80% were working and 13% were in job training.
Good News Mountaineer Garage gives away about 15 cars a month.

I'm a single mom of 3 who doesn't get assistance through welfare, but to see my tax dollars helping another single mom get off welfare makes me feel good. This world needs to stick together and help each other, that's what is wrong with society today, everybody wants something but not willing to contribute. I feel sorry for people that need help and can't get it b/c I have been there. Just research all options and the help is there somewhere. Some people just have to swallow their pride and it's not easy to do. So to the ones that need help, I hope you find it. We all need to be more thankful for what we have instead of needing more to be thankful. If you got it, give it because there is always someone out there that needs it. :) Have a nice day everyone!
Stop asking for help and help YOURSELF!!!! you won't have to ask for help -- if you help yourself!!!!!!!!!
Thank you AG I agree with you. I have NEVER be on assistance but when i asked for the first time they said NO. But yet I can help everyboby else. For some people (like Me) it is very hard to ask for help
