SISSONVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - Unemployment and poverty rates are up. Health care is less accessible to more members of the middle class. More Americans, especially children, are homeless and hungry.
Reversing those trends is the goal of more than 150 people representing 40 organizations across the globe who are in West Virginia this week for the Poverty Scholars Program Leadership School.
Their primary objective is to re-ignite the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s war on poverty.
Monday's sessions focused on poverty and the economic crisis. On Tuesday they will visit Matewan, the site of a violent coal miners' strike in 1920, and Kayford Mountain, where miners have been blasting the mountaintop for more than 20 years to reveal multiple coal seams.
The sessions continue through Saturday.

You want to end poverty in this state? Get rid of these dems/socialists and back to morality, fiscal responsibility. Quit spending money you don't have on things you don't need. Stop and think about it west virginia!!!!!!
I would hate to see the dollar amount that has been spent in the war on poverty. Why folks still think big govt. is the away to go baffles me. If the cap & trade bill, and heath reform make it into law, we will all be unemployeed and poor. I guess that is what these socailist want. It is going to make us look like Germany did in the 1920's and 30's. In stepped a charismatic speeker and the whole world was trust into war. Poeple please do some research for yourself. Find out who is pulling the strings in govt. and what they stand for. The only way out of proverty is to pull yourself up and dig your way out. The govt. money can help you in tough times, but it will keep you in poverty, not get you out.
put career welfare families to work, cut off their freebees, make them responsible for themselves and quit telling them they,re victims.the hard working ,productive people are the victims,we have no choice with the confiscation of our hard earned money.every socialist program the gov.overtakes has been proven a failure.thanks kennedy,s and lbj.its time for americans to take back our freedoms we work so hard for.o,s gov.health care take over for example.
