UPDATE @ 6pm
GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Law enforcement officers in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky took a day Tuesday to say this: prescription pill abusers may put up a fight, but we're reloading and doubling our efforts to win the war.
The officers attended a seminar sponsored by the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office and Purdue Pharma.
Local residents such as Joe Davis know the horror of drug abuse. When we talked to Davis, he was down and out and behind bars because of his addiction to prescription drugs. Jails across the region are packed with many people similar to Davis.
That's why the fight is on -- how does law enforcement keep up with this changing powerful beast that's infiltrating every corner of our communities?
Purdue Pharma, the makers of OxyContin, offered the free seminar in Gallipolis. Officers from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky received an inside look at how the usual suspects are turning to new trends. They assembled an online network called Rx patrol to consolidate information on pharmacy crimes and help police and pharmacists track the problems.
The Gallia County Sheriff's Department hosted and sponsored the seminar.
