At the Charleston Town Center Mall, it's an old habit to pull out a dollar fifty...and one that’s just gone out of style! Starting Thursday, February 1st, parking in the mall garage will cost $1.75. It’s the first time in 14 years that the price has gone up.
Mall general manager Tom Bird says, “I think there is a valid reason to do it, I don't think it's an unreasonable increase.”
That valid reason – is safety. The extra money coming in will eventually mean a safer walk to and from your car, improved lighting, and even security cameras. With 4,200 parking spaces, those extra quarters really add up.
Patrons we spoke to had mixed reactions to the price increase, but the people who work at the mall say they've heard really very few complaints about the increase. General manager Bird says the cost of living has gone up 41 percent since the mall last raised the parking rate.
