GRAYSON, Ky. (AP) - It's not just that smoking is a health risk
to the lungs of inmates and guards that Carter County Jailer Randy
Binion is dousing the smoking lamp. The filters from cigarette butts are being made into weapons.
Inventive prisoners have made small blowguns out of construction
paper. Binion says darts fashioned from a cigarette filter, a broom
straw or something similar and the staple from a book of matches
can make a dangerous projectile.
He says the darts can penetrate 22 pages of a magazine. Binion
says one of the darts could definitely put an eye out, and could be
lethal if it struck someone in a vulnerable place.
The jailer says that there have been no instances of
blow-dart-induced trauma so far, but when deputy jailers found
several of the home-made blowguns in the inmates' cells recently,
that led to the ban on smoking.
The filter and matches were the key components of the darts, so
matchbooks will also be banned along with smokes
