CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - An August 13th trial date has been set for a Dunbar couple accused of turning a blind eye to the abuse of a toddler their son is accused of killing.
Doctor John and Diane Merrifield both pleaded not guilty at their arraignment this morning before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Charlie King.
The husband and wife were indicted last month on one count each of gross negligence resulting in death.
The doctor was also indicted on two counts of treating Logan Shane Goodall for serious wounds and failing to alert authorities to the suspected abuse.
The Merrifields' son, 31-year-old Michael, is accused of sexually and physically abusing Logan, the two-year-old son of his former girlfriend, Pepper Dawn Eren. Logan died September Sixth, 2005, after being hit in the head and stomach.
Michael Merrifield is to stand trial this spring on charges of first-degree murder, child neglect by a guardian or parent resulting in death, sexual abuse by a parent or guardian and first-degree sexual assault.
Eren pleaded guilty last year to felony neglect and was sentenced to one to ten years in prison.
