Accidents Shut Down Two Area Highways

Route 23 in Johnson County was closed for most of Monday evening after a deadly crash between a car and an 18-wheeler. It happened just north of Paintsville in Johnson County around 5pm Monday.

Police say a car pulled out into the path of the truck. Two men were ejected from the car. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was flown to a Huntington hospital with critical injuries. The third victim, a woman, was taken by ambulance to a Paintsville hospital where she later died. Police believe none of the three was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The crash caused the truck to overturn, spilling its load across all four lanes of the highway. As of 11pm Monday, traffic had reopened one lane in both directions. The Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post is investigating the accident. Police have not released the names of the victims.

The second accident happened of U.S. Route 60 just east of Grayson, Kentucky shortly after 7pm. Police tell us a car and a pickup truck collided head on. One person, a child , was flown to an area hospital with what were described by first responders as "very serious injuries"
Police have not released the victim's identity.

Police have arrested Christopher Dixon on a charge of DUI and driving with a suspended license. Rt. 60 will be closed at least though 1am Tuesday while investigators reconstruct the accident.
