CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- WVU Head Football Coach Bill Stewart is currently the most popular coach of those who have led the Mountaineers on the football field for the past three decades.
A new survey out Monday from Mark Blankenship Enterprises gauges the favorability/unfavorability ratings for each of WVU's last three head football coaches.
70% of those who responded in the telephone survey said they have a favorable opinion of Coach Stewart.
The man Stewart replaced at the helm for WVU has a lower popularity rating. 54% of those surveyed had an unfavorable opinion of former Mountaineer Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, compared to a 19% favorable rating. The rest had no opinion or were undecided.
“Not only does Mr. Rodriguez have high unfavorable ratings, those who hold the unfavorable opinions do so with a notable intensity,” said Mark Blankenship, CEO of MBE, in a prepared release Monday night. “Clearly, the circumstances surrounding the departure of Mr. Rodriguez from WVU have had an impact on his public perception among West Virginia voters.”
The survey also gauged the opinion of former coach Don Nehlen, with 62% having a favorable opinion of Nehlen. Nehlen's unfavorable rating was less than 10% with the rest having no opinion.
400 people were surveyed for this opinion poll.

Coach Stewart is a moran. He sounds like an old hillbilly. Yes, he is a nice guy, but PLEASE... Anyone would have a high rating the way Rod left. I give him two years and he'll be forced out. He did well last year because of what Rod left him. Mr. Nice only goes so far. Put up the numbers Coach or good riddens. I think Pat White was the reason for the success not the coach. We'll see this year. 5 wins maybe and a loser bowl. Gurantee a new coach in three years if not sooner, any takers?
I agree. New offense and a senior QB. This could put them in the dark ages fast. GO HERD!
Well "Rich Rod's boys" were recruited by some of the same recruiters that are there now. Have you looked at the recruits we got this year and the ones that are already commmited for next year?
