A woman from Nitro is accused of driving drunk and crashing her car while taking her nine year old daughter to Girl Scouts.
It happened Thursday evening on MacCorkle Avenue at the entrance to the St. Albans Mall. According to the criminal complaint, Tonya Jo Casto was drunk when she turned off the road near the Kroger and hit a pickup truck in the side. Casto told the officer the other driver hit her, but police say there was damage to the front corner of her car and on the side of the pickup truck behind the driver's side door.
Police say Casto's speach was slurred and she was "unsteady and staggering." Casto told police she had a previous back injury and that her back was hurting her, but she refused help from paramedics.
The officer stated that he smelled alcohol on Casto's breath during the interview, and asked her to take a breathalyzer test. According to the complaint, she blew a 0.369, which is more than four times the legal limit of 0.08 in West Virginia.
Police say Casto's nine year old daughter was in the car with her at the time of the accident. A magistrate told WSAZ Casto was on her way to take her daughter to a Girl Scout event.
Casto is charged with two counts of driving under the influence causing injury, and one count of DUI with a minor child in the vehicle. She's currently in the South Central Regional Jail.
A man and a woman were in the other car. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for back pain.
