If your child is heading off to college, a big deadline is quickly approaching. It's for the paperwork you must fill out to get any type of financial aid, and the process can be quite complicated. But many folks in our region are getting a helping hand.

No doubt, it can be an information overload!

Ohio University's Kim Keffer is talking about the FAFSA, which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Students must submit the pile of paperwork to get grants, scholarships, even loans.

Sherri Willis brought her son Shayne to the free workshop. The Coal Grove Senior plans to play football in college, and knows financial aid is no game.

“It’s a lot of work and it's just complicated, because you have to fill out a lot of forms and applications and stuff like that, and you have to write a lot of essays,” said Willis.

But this assistance is helping ease the burden, by knocking down the most common misconception that only lower income students need apply.

This year, students will get about $75 billion dollars in financial aid.

The federal deadline for the FAFSA is June 30, but some states require it sooner. In West Virginia, the deadline is March 1, and in Kentucky, it's March 15. You should also check with your specific school and your specific scholarship to see if they have another deadline.
