Lock bumping is not new. It's a secret used by locksmiths for years as another tool to open locks. All it takes is a series of special cuts made to a blank key and something to tap it into a lock to get inside your home.
For obvious reasons, we're not going to show you how to make a bump key. Locksmiths say the reason you need to worry is because the technique is so easy and especially so on inexpensive locks. Generally, the more expensive the lock, the harder it is to bump it.
Locksmiths say ultimately the best defense is one with layers: a good lock, plenty of outdoor lighting and an alarm system -- even a dog to alert you to intruders.
