NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. (AP) - A New Cumberland woman has apologized for leaving her baby alone in a hot car while she went shoplifting at a Wal-Mart.
Twenty-three-year-old Elizabeth Marie Lancaster says she made a huge mistake she'll never forget.
After appearing at a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Brooke County, she told a TV station she is mortified by her actions and will accept whatever punishment is necessary.
Lancaster is charged with child neglect causing injury and shoplifting.
Police say the baby had been left alone in Lancaster's car for at least 20 minutes last month in the Weirton Wal-Mart's parking lot. The car was running and the windows were down, but it was an 85-degree day.

IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME SHE IS UNDER THE INFLUENCE AS WELL HOW DO YOU FORGET YOUR BABY IN A HOT CAR? WHAT WERE YOU PLOTTING OUT YOUR MOMENT AND ORGOT YOUR CHILD WAS IN HEAT AND WHO REMEMBERED? THAT SOUNDS LIKE WEST VIRGINIA'S SYSTEM "HERE IS A SMACK ON THE WRIST" HERE HAVE MORE CHILDREN, OUR JUDGES THAT DECIDE THIS I DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHY, BUT THEY NEED TO LOOSE THEIR JOBS FOR BEING DUMB AND NIEVE. TO BUBBA I AGREE BUT THE YOUNG MOTHERS WEST VIRGINIA HAVE BEEN TOLD IF YOU HAVE A KID YOU GET FREE FOOD, HOUSING, CARS, AND HEALTHCARE FREE FORMULA, MILK, BREAD, CHEESE, CEREAL. ALL THE THINGS WE PAY FOR. THEY JUST HAPPENED TO FORGET UH MY KIDS ARE IN A HOT CAR, SHE DIDN'T FORGET SHE JUST DIDN'T WANT IT CRYING WHILE SHE WAS TRYING TO STEAL. STUPIDITY WAS THE DRUG SHE WAS ON....SHE DOESN'T DESERVE TO HAVE KIDS!!!!!!!!!!CPS DO YOUR JOB AND TAKE THEM...
As a tax payer, I would like to know if MY TAXES are supporting this piece of wasted space. The system NEEDS TO TAKE AWAY BENEFITS WHEN YOU COMMIT A CRIME. I am sick and tired of supporting dead beats. Poor child does not have a chance in life with a mom like that. THE LAWS NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN NOT THE DEAD BEAT PARENTS. THE LAWS NEED CHANGED.
