Thomas Memorial Hospital has applied to construct a six floor patient tower.
The $65-million project would house three 30 bed nursing units, an obstetrics unit and a cafeteria.
A hospital spokesman said many patients could have a private room.
The Health Care Authority is looking to make a decision on the project by mid-April.
Construction could start early next year and be completed by early 2010.
