Police in Gallipolis say an escaped inmate charged with having child pornography in Illinois was found near a school playground Thursday.
According to a news release from the Gallipolis Police Department, Donald Crago, 43 of Gallipolis, was spotted in a wooded area behind Washington Elementary School. The release also states that Crago was wearing orange clothes and a blue coat with "County Jail" printed on the back.
Police say Crago escaped custody of probation officers while waiting to be returned to the jail after he waived extradition to Illinois in a court hearing. Court records show he's charged with 16 counts of child pornography in Illinois.
The release also states that officials at Washington Elementary School and Gallia Academy High School were "notified and took action to protect the students in their care."
Gallipolis Police say there has been a rash of similar incidents in the past few months, so the city has been working to install a video arraignment system. This would keep them from having to transport prisoners from the jail to municipal court for hearings. The department says it just purchased the equipment, but is waiting for it to be installed.
Police say Crago would not have had an opportunity to escape had this system been in place.
