RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Actress Daryl Hannah could go to trial as early as November for her role in an environmental protest at a Raleigh County coal mine earlier this summer.
The county's assistant prosecutor said most of the people arrested that day have already pleaded guilty to the charges against them, but not Hannah, who reportedly wants a fight.
State troopers arrested Hannah and several other protesters at a demonstration in front of a Massey mine last June. They said the silo at the mine poses a health risk to students at Marsh Fork Elementary School.
The protesters were charged with obstruction and impeding traffic that day. NASA scientist James Hansen was also one of the protesters charged alongside Hannah, whose film credits include "Steel Magnolias." Hansen's trial also is expected to start in November.
Charges against former West Virginia Secretary of State Ken Hechler recently were dropped. Hechler said he gave the prosecutor a tape that proved he had not broken either law during the mine protest.

Well I think it is Great that Daryl Hannah is fighting this. There are ways to do things and mountain top removal just does not seem like the best way. Just like the Tarsands here are wrecking our environment. And where I live they are spending billions on a freeway that will destroy the environment and hurt peoples health. They say it is about creating jobs. but there are better ways to create jobs and make money that don't involve ruining the planet. No jobs on a dead planet.
To KMH - did you not read your own freaking comment(on 9/28 at 9:29)? You totally blew it - I was laughing at you, as everyone has reading these comments of yours. You are the epitome (can you read that big word? do you know what it means?) of the WV hick that can't see the forest for the dynamite sticks. By the way, it's ridiculous - no e's hon. And you're kind (9/25 at 10:48) - I guess you meant YOUR KIND - one more for the road - the word is HYPOCRIT - google it! Should I go on? What do you audit anyway - the ingredients in coal dirt?
To Toye: you are hilarious. I know how to spell sense, but the saying is "cents". Wow, what do you do for a living? I hope you're not a teacher. I bet your family is real proud of you, lol.
