Lafe Ward is a former assistant prosecutor in Mingo County. But he now finds himself on the other side of the law and across the border in Kentucky facing a murder charge. The Commonwealth's Attorney in Pike County says Ward spent January 10th of last year drinking mixed drinks in Ward's law office in Williamson. The prosecutor says Ward made a trip in his SUV to get pills from two different pharmacies. Ward is accused of then running a red light, with his SUV hitting a car driven by Benita Dixon. Dixon died from her injuries. Prosecutor Rick Bartley says Ward acted without regard for human life and Ward is accused of wanton murder. The defense says Ward suffers from mental problems including bi-polar disorder. They say Ward was drinking and taking pills to cope with his problems, and they don't believe the wreck should be connected to a murder charge. The trial started Monday(February 26th) and is expected to last through March 1st.
