CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Protesters stood outside the Department of Environmental Protection in Charleston calling for clean drinking water Tuesday.

They say mountain top removal mining and coal slurry ponds are making water throughout West Virginia unsafe.

They were also calling for the resignation of Randy Huffman, the DEP secretary, and asking for the federal Environmental Protection Agency to step in.

Kathy Cosco, a spokeswoman for the DEP, says they enforce all of the rules and work closely with the EPA.

The group also voiced similar concerns earlier this year. Then they chained themselves to the doors inside the DEP and were arrested.

This time, protesters handed out "coalfield kool-aid" from a stand on the street, outside of the DEP.

Excuse me? Go back to where i came from? I grew up in Boone Co. I am the son of a coal miner. Ive lived in WV all my life and my family was here long before WV was even a state. I work hard for my money and pay my bills. I have a long legacy of mining in my bloodline. AND I was one at that protest. So tell me, where am I supose to go back to? I have just as much right if not more to speak out against MTR. I shouldnt have to worry if the creek my nephew plays in in front of his house is poisoned. You're Hard working? Doing what, poisoning people and destroying the land? Mine coal the traditional way, deep mining. It provides more jobs and doesnt drasticaly change the landscape of MY home!
