ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A case of bacterial meningitis has surfaced on the campus of Ohio University.
Charles "Charlie" Wulf is a first year student who lives in James Hall. His parents authorized the release of his name so that any other students who have come in contact with Wulf can monitor their own health.
Wulf was initially treated at a hospital in Athens and is now in stable condition at a Columbus hospital.
A news release from the University says: "Student Health Services physician Dr. Lee Ann Conard and Vice President of Student Affairs Kent Smith met with James Hall residents this morning. Conard provided information about the disease, answers to student's questions and an opportunity to receive a prophylactic antibiotic that will lessen their chances of becoming infected. They will also contact other students outside the hall who could have been in contact with the ill student recently."
"I wanted to wanted to err on the side of caution, making sure that close contacts were aware and informed so they could decide if they wanted to pursue the antibiotic," Smith said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bacterial meningitis -- though rare and not as transmissible as the common cold or flu -- can pass from one person to another through contact with saliva, such as by touching, kissing, drinking from the same cup, being very near someone who sneezes, or having prolonged contact with the infected person. Studies show that meningitis bacteria can't live outside of the body for more than a few minutes. Therefore, infection from the environment is not likely.

I was also misdiagnosed at the first hospital I went to. I was attending Ohio State University and went to Riverside Hospital (it was the closest hospital at the time) with severe flu-like symptoms in April 2009. They said I had the flu even though my temperature was skyrocketing, my neck hurt, and I was sensitive to light. They sent me away with two tylenol (right after I vomited) and they said I just had the flu. The doctor said I couldn't have meningitis since I could move my head side to side! The next day I went to Christ Hospital in Cinci where I was diagnosed correctly and stayed there for a week. It seems odd that these hospitals do not notify each other about outbreaks like this. Every hospital knows about H1N1 alerts but not meningitis, even though it is deadly and pretty common on campuses.
My son, Charlie Wulf, did have the vaccine. My concern for students is the misdiagnosis by O'Bleness hospital and that when returned to his dorm many people including 2 residence hall employees watched him get sicker and sicker and did nothing. Praise God that he is alive and well.
Ohio does not require vaccines for meningits yet for college students. There is a bill in the works trying to make it a requirement. OU has had 5 cases of bacterial meningitis in the last 9 months (2 in Feb, 2 in June, and 1 in Oct). My son was one of them. He had the vaccine last July before he enrolled, but he got the strain that was not covered. But the doctors did tell us that one of the reasons he is alive today is because of the vaccine - it helped with some of the cross-over symptoms for the strain he got sick with (type B). He is doing fine now and fully recovered.
