Crews have called off the search for a man who fell into the Kanawha River in Putnam County Wednesday morning.

It happened near the Rolling Hills subdivision, which is about a mile from the John Amos Power Plant.

Emergency workers tell us a man was crossing the river in a john boat (similar to a rowboat) when it flipped over and the man fell in to the river. We're told he wasn't wearing a life vest.

A witness tells us after the boat flipped, the man tried to get back into the boat.

Crews have recovered the boat, but they've called off the search for the man. They say the conditions too bad to search.
