CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The trial of a man accused of killing a church pianist is under way in Kanawha County Circuit Court.
Twenty-year-old Jonathan Joseph Lind's lawyer told jurors Monday that the defendant killed 45-year-old Edward Ayers in self-defense. Defense attorney Troy Giatras said the two men argued and Ayers became aggressive and waved a knife.
Lind told police after he was arrested that he was afraid for his life.
Assistant Kanawha County Prosecutor Michelle Drummond told jurors that Lind killed Ayers with a claw hammer. After the killing, Drummond said Lind took Ayers' car and traded it for crack cocaine. Drummond said Lind also took Ayers' credit card and used it at several stores.
Ayers' body was found in his Charleston apartment on April Third, 2006.
Lind is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and forgery with a credit card.
